Trace light from cornea to retina

Separate transparent optical structures from the neural structures that process the image.

Learning objectives

Build a route, not a list

Light passes through the cornea, aqueous-filled anterior segment, pupil, lens and vitreous toward the retina. The pupil is an opening controlled by the iris; it is not a transparent lens. The cornea and lens refract light. Photoreceptors in the retina begin the neural conversion that ultimately supports vision.

Use the model as an explanation tool

On the atlas, first locate the front and back of the globe. Follow the path with a finger, then close the labels and explain the role of each structure aloud. Draw separate arrows for light traveling inward and neural information leaving through the optic nerve. A diagram compresses the actual retinal circuitry; do not interpret its arrows as a complete cellular map.

Practical reasoning station

Practical station: a classmate calls the pupil a lens. Correct the statement using location, tissue identity and function.

Show explanation

The pupil is the aperture within the iris. The lens is a separate transparent structure posterior to it. Aperture size regulates entry of light; lens shape contributes to focusing. Assess whether your explanation distinguishes an opening from a tissue.

Practice questions

Practice score: 0 / 0

1. What is the pupil?

Show explanation

Answer: An opening in the iris

The pupil is an opening; the iris surrounds it and controls its size.

2. Which structure contains photoreceptors?

Show explanation

Answer: Retina

Photoreceptors are retinal sensory cells. The transparent cornea and lens have optical roles.
