Eye examination literacy & practical preparation
Match a learning question to an examination concept and recognize simulator limits.
Updated:
Learning objectives
- Compare acuity, field and internal-eye examination.
- Build a structured explanation for a supervised practical.
Choose the question before the instrument
Visual acuity concerns resolving detail; a visual-field assessment samples vision at different locations. A dilated examination allows an eye-care professional to inspect internal structures. These components complement each other. A normal result on one task should not be presented as a complete assessment of eye health.
Prepare without pretending to examine
For each simulator, write down its input, displayed output and omitted conditions. Screen brightness, viewing distance and uncalibrated displays change what a visitor sees. Use the app to rehearse vocabulary and interpretation of fictional examples. Patient examination, instrumentation and prescribing require appropriate training, supervision and calibrated equipment.
Practical reasoning station
Practical station: explain one eye test in four sentences: its question, the observed response, one limitation and the next learning resource you would consult.
Show explanation
A useful answer separates observation from interpretation and names an actual limitation. This informal rubric builds explanatory skills; it is not an accredited OSCE score or permission to examine a patient.

Read → explain without looking → answer → check the source. Try reviewing tomorrow, after three days and after a week. Adapt the schedule to your mistakes; this is not a validated learning algorithm.
